In conjunction with the upcoming National Protect Your Identity Week, Better Business Bureau is hosting its second annual Secure Your ID Day shredding event on Saturday, October 17, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Premier Document Shredding in Mesa.
National Protect Your Identity Week begins October 17, and continues through the 24th. Consumers are encouraged to bring up to five boxes/bags of paper documents to be shredded on site for free while they wait. BBB will also be giving away two home office shredders to the 50th and 100th cars at the event. Consumers will be given useful tips and resources from the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. In addition, fraud specialists and experts from Identity Theft 911 will be on hand to answer questions and offer tips to consumers to help them manage and safeguard their identity and to help reduce their risk of identity fraud or identity theft.
“We encourage everyone to come to this event and take advantage of the free service,” said Matthew Fehling, BBB President/CEO. “It is never too late to start guarding yourself from identity theft and shredding your personal information is a great place to start.”
Arizona remains the number one state for identity theft based on the number of complaints collected in 2008 by the Consumer Sentinel Network, a secure online database used by law enforcement.
“In spite of doing everything right, consumers nonetheless can find themselves victimized and forced to spend time and money restoring their good name and good credit,” Fehling said. “By providing educational tools and free document shredding as part of Protect Your Identity week, BBB continues to help our communities guard against identity theft.”
Consumers can find other Protect Your Identity Week educational events by visiting www.ProtectYourIDNow.org. The site also features an interactive quiz to help consumers assess their risk of identity theft; videos, blogs and identity theft prevention tips. The Web site is also available in Spanish at www.cuidesuidentidad.org.
Premier Document Shredding is located at 2250 W. Broadway Road #104, Mesa, 85202 and is owned and operated by retired law enforcement and veterans. For more information contact BBB Foundation at 602-264-2864.
